John 7: 40 – 53
The reason the guards gave for not arresting Jesus was that “there has never been anybody who spoke like him”. There was something about Jesus’ words that brought healing and wholeness to their hidden wounds and their brokenness. It is like a word of a Father to a child that he has not stopped believing in. They were carried away by these words of Jesus to places in their heart where they experienced joy, love, hope and kindness. For the first time, they felt like loved children. Do we feel this way when we hear the words of Jesus? Do His words take us to areas of our lives where we experience love, kindness, joy, peace and hope? Do his words bring healing and wholeness also to our hidden wounds and brokenness? Do his words bring comfort to our silent cries and fears? The guards, like the other Jews in today’s gospel, went back to the Pharisees, wondering, “could this be the Christ or a prophet?”. This question is very important as we get closer to the Holy Week. The effect of this Holy Week on our lives will depend on who Jesus has become for us during this season of Lent. Is he someone we hear about? Or is he someone we have fallen in love with? Let us get closer to Jesus during these days as we approach the Holy Week where the drama of the climax of our salvation unfolds. Spend some quality time with Jesus and he will never leave you the same as he prepares you to understand and to be transformed by the week that is truly HOLY.
May God bless you all!
